Harmony. Harmonizing with life and specifically traffic

As of late, my yoga classes have included some chanting, either the simplicity of Aum or a sing-a-long to Wilson Phillips’ “Hold On”.  It’s not that I have the voice of an angel, in fact, quite the opposite.  I just really love music and singing, even as a youngster it was my favorite part of church.  Knowing that my vocal ability for comedy was much stronger than my ability to hit the Mariah Carey high notes, it took quite a bit of courage and “what do I have to loose” attitude to stand or sit in front of a couple dozen people and belt out even the first note. But what I noticed was this, most everyone in the class was willing to go there with me and actually match the note I was attempting.

I remember being in a music class in elementary school and the teacher making a point to pluck a string on a guitar, which was next to several other instruments and the phenomenon was this,  all of the other instruments in the vibrational sphere began to hum on the same note.

I believe we as humans crave this too.  We long to find harmony with others.  It requires so much more effort to create disharmony, which is sometimes necessary in social or political realms, the important element here is discernment.  When is it appropriate to harmonize and when is friction needed to spin out of the group?

My homework on the mat is continued singing, cuz it makes me happy.  Off the mat, I take this practice into traffic.  Yield to someone today and then notice the energy surge that comes with it.  Is it anger? and can you repurpose it to something more useful, like the volume of your voice as you belt out another verse to Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline”.  Sing it to your car neighbor and see what happens.

Namaste,

Kim
